Kings Seeds Salad Leaf Beet Bulls Blood
Although Bulls blood beetroot is primarily grown as an ornamental plant for its dark red leaves, it is now mildly used in baby leaf salads. The larger leaves can be as an alternative to Spinach. It provides deep red, almost crimson colour leaves with a sweet taste to add to any salad. The colour intensifies as the plant matures. The roots are a deep red colour and tender. The plant grows to 15cm tall and 10cm wide.
Hardy Annual.
When to Sow Bulls' Blood Beetroot Seeds
March to August.
Where to Sow
For baby leaves sow thinly in shallow drills 1.5cm (½") deep with 30cm (12") between rows.
What to do Next
Cut leaves from each plant leaving some leaves on each so they re-grow. If you require mature roots, thin the seedlings gradually as they grow to an eventual spacing of 10cm (4"). Do not transplant.
Harvest
April to October.
Handy Tip
For micro salads, sow every 7 days all year round in trays underglass or on a windowsill and harvest as seedlings and use as a garnish. Leave a few outdoor plants to mature and eat the roots like other beetroots.
